Fashion Forward: Petey's Strange Fruit

I love clothes. I love art. And I love people who have a passion for those things. Memphis, TN, best known as the Bluff City, has a rep for being rich in musical heritage but seems to lag behind in fashion. Here's where Shalishah "Petey" Franklin comes in.
Reaching backwards to make us fashion forward, Franklin describes herself as a collector, thus already setting the platform for viewing clothing as an art form. April 2010 brought the launch of her online vintage clothing boutique Strange Fruit Vintage which specializes in urban vintage clothing primarily dating back to the 1980s.

I was fortunate enough to take part in the launch party held in downtown Memphis in the always hip and forward art district. The energy was high and the details were on point. All the way down to the FunDip candy offered at the reception, further evoking nostalgic images of the 80s-90s.

As mentioned in the above video, the developing store will be supplemented by a series of "Pop-up Shops" that will showcase the clothing in unique venues around town. We all know that old school is the new school. 80s-90s are alive and well in current fashion and it's nice to see the urban aspect being spotlighted. Get into Petey and her dream!
