Dare to Hope

“In a world filled with hate, we must still dare to hope. In a world filled with anger, we must still dare to comfort. In a world filled with despair, we must still dare to dream. And in a world filled with distrust, we must still dare to believe.”
“If you enter this world knowing you are loved and you leave this world knowing the same, then everything that happens in between can be dealt with.”
-Michael Jackson

Life gets messy sometimes. Things happen to side track you and not everything goes as planned. Surround yourself with people that love you and show love through your own actions and deeds and life will be that much easier. Never feel like anything is hopeless.

Vanity Fair

So, the BET Awards were quite a let down this year. I did enjoy most of the flashback moments but it seemed unorganized and there were no legends in attendance.
Where were Michael's peers?
Whitney? Mariah? Madonna? Prince? Diana? Quincy? Lionel? Patti? No one...
Anyway, I enjoyed some of the fashion. Most notably Mrs. Knowles Carter who opted again for a Balmain ensemble.

[Check out my previous Balmain post HERE]

She looks really thin here. Since when does she have that much of a gap between her thighs?? Hmm...
I LOVE the 80s, so of course I love this look.
[what are her shoes doing though?]

The dress really reminds me of the look that Vanity wore for a scene in The Last Dragon. Peep the embroidery, the jagged hemline, and the exaggerated shoulders.
I hope this 80s revival lasts for a while. The campy hip hop references aren't nearly as interesting as designs such as this that intermingle the influence while bringing something fresh.

Get a closer look below and view Vanity's performance in the film.

On a side note, I recently posted via facebook how I wished Rihanna would be considered for the same role that Vanity played in the film. Apparently, the film's producers are heavily courting her for the role. Good look! We'll see.

Remember the TIME

Time magazine releases special edition showing the life and times of Michael Jackson.

Actor Isaiah Washington was scorned for his anti-gay tirade. He's now supporting equality through the NOH8 campaign which protests Prop 8. Interesting...

[Doesn't the wedding band add some irony to the imagery?]

Essentials: Personal Style

Every adult man eventually, whether consciously or unconsciously, develops a personal style. That's the case even if it tragically includes camo, flannel, and a plethora of sweatpants.
Upon examining my own frequent purchases and style choices, I realized I have a few staples.

1. What's Tee?
I'm a v-neck t-shirt guy. I have a million of them. I feel like a man that can look amazing in a simple tee has it all together. I like simplicity and comfort. The v-neck shows enough skin while still being conservative.
2. Skin Tight
Denim should be trim. For me, at least. I can't do baggy. I'm 5'8" 130lbs and baggy clothes look foolish on me. Trim cuts do not inhibit swagger. I don't feel the need to tug at my clothes all of the time. I like things to fit.
3. Slip Ups
Loafers/Driving Shoes. The anti-sneaker. I buy sneakers occasionally but my most versatile shoe is the driving shoe. Slim them on with no socks and I'm ready to go. Comfortable, classic, and never bulky, they serve many purposes in my wardrobe.
4. Cat in the Hat
Blame it on my father. I love hats. He was an old school guy who liked bug brimmed hats. Hat's have been worn by sophisticated men for ages and I love them. I scale it down with a driving cap or a fedora. I'm not too fond of anything too big. And the Rat Pack didn't wear baseball caps.
5. It's in the Bag
When I travel or need to carry things, I need a great bag. I think that backpacks are either juvenile or best for camping. So, I think messenger bags, totes, etc should be the bag of choice for a man like myself.

Of course, in addition to these, I have a fondness for cardigans and a sudden love affair with gingham prints. I like simplicity. I like minimal patterns and stick to a cool color palette, opting for interesting cuts rather than ostentatious colors. These choices don't fit every man but they are what you will mostly see me in on a regular day.
What are your essentials?

So...this editorial is as old as Angela Lansbury but I love the images. I just posted another recent editorial depicting a Roman soldier that was much more high fashion than this. However, I think Mr. White is a superstar and I love these photos.
