The Emerald Triangle is made up of the three Californian counties of Mendicino, Trinity, and Humboldt.
Never heard of it? Neither had I, but this area is the home of the largest production of marijuana in the nation. Marijuana can be legally grown for medicinal purposes in the state of California. Possession of the drug is still against federal law but California state laws allow it. Because of this, many people operate marijuana "farms" and greenhouses, even in their own backyards.
Although it's legal, that doesn't mean that it doesn't have many opponents. The growing of marijuana in this area has been a billion dollar industry. The cultivation of the plant for financial gain rather than recreation has led to many harmful practices such as deforestation and chemical usage as well as a spike in crime.
The marijuana industry has become somewhat a savior for the region whose lumber and fishing industries have suffered. Rumors are rampant suggesting the complete legalization of marijuana in California in recent years.
This is quite interesting. I'm completely drug free and an advocate for drug free life but this does show that time brings about change. Northern California has always been quite liberal but this is a new high (pun intended).
