A Dose of Art: Jacob Lawrence

Artist Jacob Lawrence (1917-2000) is among the best-known twentieth century African American painters. Lawrence concentrated on depicting the history and struggles of African Americans in his work. He was only in his twenties when his Migration Series made him nationally famous.

The Brooks Museum of Art here in Memphis, Tennessee has acquired some of his art. The exhibition, The Prints of Jacob Lawrence, 1963-2000, will be at the museum until September 6, 2009.

This exhibition of 81 etchings, woodcuts, silkscreens, and lithographs are from the artist’s estate.
